Anwar Abdul Shaikh tried to escape the proverbial long arm of the law by posing as a police officer to dupe unsuspecting victims. However, the law caught up with after his latest extortion bid was caught on camera.
The Kasturba Marg police arrested the 39-year-old former nightclub bouncer for extorting people by posing as fake cop. Shaikh, a resident of Kurla's Nehru Nagar area, has dozens of cases in various police stations registered against him. The cops arrested him on September 16 claimed to have solved three cases against him.
According to police sources, Shaikh cheated three people in April, July and August, twice posing as a cop and once as an underworld don. He was captured on CCTV camera in August, when he duped Ravindra Pandekar, a 43-year-old diamond merchant.
Shaikh had also cheated two other complainants named Badal Chand Chalani and Deepak Madle by posing as a cop. He threatened to book them in fake cases and took two gold chains and a ring from them.
Confessed to crimes
"When he was cheating Pandekar, the entire incident was captured on CCTV. While going through the footage, we identified the accused and arrested him on September 16. He confessed to his crimes and three cases have been solved since," said API Bharat Ghune from Kasturba Marg police station.
