Mumbai: Speeding businessman rams taxi, kills woman

A 44-year-old businessman, speeding in his Honda City car, crashed into a cab on Tuesday morning killing a woman travelling in it. Victim was rushed to GT Hospital, but succumbed to injuries to the head

A 44-year-old businessman, speeding in his Honda City car, crashed into a cab on Tuesday morning killing a woman travelling in it. The Colaba police arrested the garment businessman identified as Mohanlal Tanya, a resident of Thane, who was released on bail later.

The incident occurred around 6.40 am near Regal circle in south Mumbai when the deceased Chandabai Panse (48), a resident of Cuffe Parade was on her way to Churchgate in the cab along with two other women, who were injured in the accident. The taxi driver,âu00c2u0080u00c2u0088Nilesh Tandel (37) also sustained minor injuries. Tanya was speeding towards Shaheed Bhagat Singh Marg and crashed into the Maruti Eco car. The car fell to its side because of the impact of Tanya's car. Chandabai suffered serious injuries on her head and body. "Chandabai was rushed to GT hospital where she received treatment but a few hours later died of her injuries," said a police officer. The police said Tanya told them he had gone to Colaba for a drive.

Tanya was later arrested for negligent driving and tests were done to check if he was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. However, he was not found drunk and has been booked under Section 304 (A) (death by negligence) of the IPC. He was produced before a court and granted bail on a bond of Rs 15,000, the police said.
