Apart from Mumbai, several areas in the neighbouring city of Pune as well as surrounding regions of Western Maharashtra also experienced heavy rains.

This caused the disruption of rail and road traffic between Pune and Mumbai.

Rains washed away a section of the railway track at Kamshet near Lonavala, badly affecting Pune-bound trains, while authorities tried to maintain the Pune-Mumbai single railway line, a railway official said.

According to the Pune meteorological department, Vidharbha, Central Maharashtra, Marathwada and some parts of rest of state has observed heavy rainfall. IMD has also issued alerts to North Konkan stating heavy rainfall for a couple of days in Marathwada, Vidharbha, Mumbai and Pune regions.

Meanwhile in Mumbai, after hovering above 30 degrees for more than a fortnight, Mumbaikars heaved a sigh of relief after the city experienced good rainfall this past week. The met department had forecast spells of rain and thundershowers for the next 24 hours; it says that this is monsoon itself and not the feared 'retreating monsoon'.

Met officials are of the opinion that the rains will retreat only after September-end.
