An electronic fusion artiste has been arrested for crashing his Volkswagen Polo into four school students crossing a road in Malad early this morning. Of the four children, one sustained major injuries. He is scheduled for a surgery later in the day.
Suraj Yadav (15), Ditesh (17), Harkesh Parjapati (14) and Hritik Pal (14) were crossing a road while out on a jog behind HyperCITY mall in Malad around 4.30 am. They waited on the side of the road for an autorickshaw to pass. A speeding Volkswagen Polo, which was behind the autorickshaw, swerved hard to avoid it and crashed into the children.
Karan Deshmukh (22), a renowned percussionist and electronic fusion artiste based in Mumbai, was behind the wheel of the luxury car. The Bangur Nagar police arrested him.
The young boys were taken to Siddharth Hospital in Goregaon to treat their injuries. Ditesh was later shifted to Nanavati Hospital, where he will undergo a surgery today for shoulder and leg fractures.
An officer at the Bangur Nagar police station said Deshmukh has been booked under sections 279 (rash driving or riding on a public way) and 338 (causing grievous hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the IPC, besides various sections under the Motor Vehicles Act. "We are investigating whether he was driving drunk, and accordingly add additional charges, if necessary."
