Oil discovery named after 26/11 martyr

The Petroleum Ministry yesterday christened the 25th oil and gas discovery made by Cairn India in its Rajasthan block after the gallant assistant police inspector Tukaram Omble, who sacrificed his life for the capture of the 26/11 terrorist Mohammad Ajmal Qasab.

At a function in Rajasthan, Petroleum Minister Murli Deora said, "Omble took the bullets leading to the capture of Qasab. We salute his bravery and our country can never forget such bravehearts."u00a0u00a0

Omble's family is touched by the Petroleum Ministry's gesture. Bharti Omble, daughter of the slain cop told MiD DAY this morning, "The family is happy that the oil discovery is named after my father. The officials had sought my mother's permission before announcing this. The sacrifice by my father makes us proud.''

The Shahid Tukaram Omble discovery is the latest and the first exploration well in Cairn's 2008-09-exploration programme. Cairn India is to begin oil production from the Rajasthan block in July-September.

Cairn's previous discoveries have been named after Bollywood actress Aishwarya Rai and the mother of a Union minister.
