A Sewri fast-track court will pronounce its verdict in the Ramabai Nagar firing case today.

The case dates to 1997 and in the dock is State Reserve Police officer, Manohar Kadam, who allegedly, ordered indiscriminate firing on a Dalit mob which was protesting against the desecration of an Ambedkar statue on July 11, 1997.

The firing left 10 dead and 26 injured.

According to the Justice S D Gundewar Commission, Kadam had resorted to firing without receiving any orders from the seniors.

However, in his statement, Kadam had accused the state and the police of victimising him as he belonged to an "open" caste and was not a dalit.
