Reversing dumper runs over 63-yr-old

Goregaon resident Narayan Nandan was crushed under the wheels of a BMC dumper while returning from his morning walk; driver fled the spot but later surrendered


A morning walk proved to be fatal for Goregaon resident Narayan Nandan (63) as a dumper on BMC duty accidentally ran him over. Nandan succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead on the spot.

Nandan, a resident of Link Palace on Ciba road, Goregaon (East) was returning home from his morning walk at 10 am when the accident took place. An eyewitness claimed that the dumper was making its garbage collection rounds from Sai Complex area in Goregaon when it crashed into the victim on a slope.

The driver was reversing the dumper on the slope when it ran over Nandan. A watchman, who witnessed the accident, said that Nandan was walking in the opposite direction and was unaware of the dumper behind him. Unable to escape, he was crushed under its wheels.

Fearing public outrage, the driver of the dumper, Mintu Siddique Shaikh, (43) fled from the spot after the accident. He later surrendered at Dindoshi police station. An FIR has been registered against him under sections 304A, 279 of the IPC and Motor Act 134(A, B).

An official from Dindoshi police station said, "Shaikh ran away from the spot, as he feared that the people present would thrash him. But he surrendered himself around 4 pm. He will be produced in the Borivli court on Friday." Devastated by the incident, Nandan's son Jayesh said, "We will make sure that the driver is punished for his mistake. His negligence has caused my father his life."
