Rizvi College plans to introduce regular counseling sessions for all students after an HSC (Science) student was murdered by his classmates for ransom.
What surprised the authorities was the fact that the accused were studious and also scored first class in their 10th standard exams. The need to pursue materialistic possessions may have forced the students to take such a drastic step, said the authorities.
According to the college administration, medical specialists such as psychiatrists will work with the students in addressing their problems and also guide them in thinking about their interests and competencies.
The college plans to include the parents too in such sessions.
SGA Zaidi, principal of Rizvi College, said, "Earlier, counseling was only given to those students who asked for it. Students who have family problems or suffer from depression are counseled by us, if they approach us."
"We have orientation programmes for newcomers. I have also told students not to pursue materialistic things and asked the parents to keep a watch on their kids," said Zaidi.
"There is a limit to what the teachers can do, parents also have to take care of their wards," Zaidi added.
"The first thing to be done in the next academic year is to start a counseling sessions for all those who take admissions irrespective of whether they ask for it or not."
"It will help us to monitor any deviation and counsel them before they err," noted Zaidi
The college also plans to start English Language class for students coming from vernacular medium to help them understand the language and also to cope up with other students, said the principal.
