Burglars decamped with Rs 22,500 collected from fines by traffic offenders and the service revolver of a senior police inspector from the office of the Government Railway Police (GRP) Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Line) Vasant Kore-gaonkar on Wednesday night. The robbery came to light yesterday morning, when the officer opened his chamber.
The robbers had cut the grills of the window of the chamber and broken into the office cupboard. The office is situated close to the Byculla police station. Senior railway police officials are red-faced because the robbery took place in their office at a time, when there is heightened security alert across the city.
The headquarters even has a guard on duty and is a beehive of activity, as it houses even the wireless unit of the GRP. Officials of the GRP are confident of nabbing the thieves.
"A case has been lodged at the Agripada police station, as the headquarters falls in their jurisdiction. We are also conducting parallel investigations, and an enquiry has been instituted against the guards on duty," said
Koregaonkar.
