At least 10 students sustained burn injuries when a schoolbus caught fire near New Panvel, Navi Mumbai this morning.
The CKT high school bus carrying around 40 students, aged between 10 to 15 years, caught fire around 6.15 am, the police said. Many students got injured while trying to jump out of the burning bus.
The driver of the school bus fled the scene, but was later nabbed by the police.
A short circuit in the rear side of the bus may have caused the fire, the police added.
The locals immediately alerted the Panvel police and helped the cops in getting the injured children tou00a0 nearby hospitals.
According to the inspecting officer PSI Kardile, eight children suffered major burns on their body, while others escaped with minor burns. The cops informed the parents who rushed to the hospitals to check on their children's health.
Kardile said, "We are in the process of preparing the list of all the students who are admitted in various hospitals across the city."
All schools in Mumbai opened today after a 10-day break on account of swine flu.
