After an unlawful Bangladeshi immigrant was arrested for the macabre gunny bag murder, Mumbai Police has formed a special team to narrow in on more such residents
After the Mumbai police arrested a man for the gruesome murder of his wife and 11-year-old sister-in-law, startling revelations have come to light about an illegal Bangladeshi population thriving undetected in the city.
Late on Wednesday night, a special squad of the Mumbai Police arrested Ripon Khan for allegedly murdering his wife Laizu and dumping her body in a gunny bag on a local train.
He had also murdered her sister Rubina, since she had witnessed the gruesome murder.
Khan was arrested while he was trying to flee to Bangladesh. Police revealed that both victims and accused were Bangladeshis, who had been living illegally in Mumbai.
During Khan's interrogation, the police learnt that there are several agents operating in the city, who transfer Bangladeshis to Mumbai and subsequently help them procure jobs here.
If they get into any trouble or commit a crime, the same agents give them passage back into their motherland, in return for a sum of money.
"Having learnt of this new modus operandi, we are going to get cracking on such agents," said Police Inspector Rakesh Sharma. "This is a new trend that is emerging," he added. All police stations have been briefed to be on the lookout for such agents, and get cracking on them.
Meanwhile, the Nallasopara police have managed to fish out Rubina's body from the creek. The body had decomposed beyond recognition, added police officials.
In course of interrogation, Khan had confessed that he killed his wife owing to severe domestic animosity, because he was fed up of bearing the brunt of his wife's regular bouts of violence.
Afraid that Rubina would expose his crime, he murdered her and dumped her body in a creek in Nallasopara.
Gearing up
A special squad has been formed by the Mumbai Police to investigate and crack down on the illegal Bangladeshi immigrants in the city. This squad will receive information from the Special Branch (I) and then conduct raids accordingly.
Preliminary enquiries have revealed that these agents operate in pockets across the city. The hubs which house the Bangaladeshi population include Vasai, Mira Road (Naya Nagar), Ambujwadi in Malad-Malwani, Kali Basti, Gokuldham, Prem Nagar in Goregaon, Teen Dongri in Andheri, Wadala and P D'mello Road.
