A stray dog was beaten to death by locals at Mahavir Nagar, Kandivli, after it attacked a pedestrian, making it the second incident in Charkop in the last week. According to Charkop police, they have received several complaints in the past from residents of Mahavir Nagar about the dog menace in the area.

Cops said the dog had bitten around five people in the last two days

According to police sub-inspector Harsharani Devre, on Wednesday around 11.30 pm, a street dog attacked a woman near the Raj Arcade building. In a bid to save the woman, Sudarshan Gupta, a local resident, and a watchman from nearby society started hitting the dog with sticks. Hariprasad Amin, the hotel supervisor who works in Balaji Hotel nearby, also joined them to thrash the dog.

A local NGO worker, who was passing from the same area, witnessed the incident and informed the police, who then arrested Amin. The other two are currently absconding. The worker called an ambulance and took the injured dog to BSPC animal hospital at Parel. Last morning, the dog died during treatment. A post-mortem report revealed that it died due to head and stomach injuries.

Anand Koli, senior inspector at Charkop police station, said, "We have been getting a lot of complaints from residents of Mahavir Nagar about the menace of stray dogs, and have asked the BMC to take necessary steps. However, they have not taken any action yet. The dog that was killed had bitten around five people and according to residents. He was out of control."
