On Friday, Zara Shaikh (name changed) (24), a Jogeshwari-based software engineer and mother of one, accused her businessman husband Danish (25) of dowry harassment and physical assault.
Acting on her complaint, the Oshiwara police have detained Danish and his younger brother Tapish (22) and are looking for his parents, who are also named in the complaint.
Confirming the action, Inspector Dattaray Sankhe, of Oshiwara police station said, "Danish and his brother are in police custody under detention. Investigations are on. We are looking for his mother, father and brother as well." Sankhe added that Zara and Danish who got married on April 27, 2005 had been staying in Jogeshwari since.
Speaking to Sunday MiD DAY, Zara Shaikh alleged, "Danish used to assault me for dowry. Within a month of my marriage I got to know that he was having an affair with Shabnam, his college friend. I have been going through lot of pain." Zara has a six-month-old daughter. Zara alleged that Danish's family was demanding a dowry of Rs 25 lakh. Danish runs a joint family business along with his mother, father, two sisters and a brother. They have a cosmetic shop called Beauty World in Lokhandwala, Andheri along with a manufacturing unit.
Despite several attempts by Sunday MiD DAY, Danish's parents remained unavailable for comment. However his aunt Shameem said, "This is absolutely false, there is no dispute."
The Oshiwara police have charged Danish and his brother under Section 407 (harassment for dowry) under Indian Penal Code (IPC).
Zara's father Delhiwala said, "I used to feel that my daughter would go mad; we had to take some action against Danish."
According to Dr Dimpy, gynaecologist in Saifi hospital, "I did not meet or speak to Danish before Zara's delivery or after. He does not appear concerned about his daughter." Finally, on June 20, Zara left Danish and shifted to her parents' home. The police continue their investigation.
