Four, and not three individuals, died after the girder of the Kopri bridge collapsed on a Kalyan-bound train on Friday morning and brought the rail traffic on the Central line to a complete standstill for over three hours.

Overhead wire

While the motorman R Ramchandran (42), and two passengers Subhash Nikam (35), and Gopal Ghadi (69) had earlier been identified as the casualties in the mishap, it came to light on Friday night that the accident also indirectly claimed the life of Abasaheb Jadhav (55), who fell off the roof of the train he was travelling on after he touched an overhead wire, nine hours after the accident.

Jadhav was on his way to his Kalyan home on the jam-packed local train that was ferrying passengers stranded for several hours due to the Kopri accident.

Said Assistant Commissioner of the Kalyan division of the Government Railway Police P Sardar, "Abasaheb Jadhav was travelling on the rooftop of a train stationed onu00a0 platform number three of Thane station at around 8.15 pm when he came in contact with the high-tension wire overhead."

Case Filed againstu00a0Contractor

The police have even registered a case against the Thane Municipal Corporation contractor who constructed the bridge under Sections 304 (A), 337, 338, 427 of Indian Penal Code and R/W 151/179 of Indian Railway Act.

"We have registered a case against the concerned TMC contractor, on the basis of the complaint registered by Bharat Sakat, the section engineer of Central Railway.

We have not managed to locate the contractor yet," said Assistant Commissioner of the Kalyan division of the Government Railway Police u00a0P Sardar.

The contractor faces 10 years of imprisonment if he is indicted.
