In a first of its sorts, a Ulhasnagar-based housewife of a punter has been issued an arms licence after the Thane police commissioner foresaw "potential threat" to her life from one of his deputy commissioners posted in the Mumbai crime branch.

Bookie Anil Jaisinghani and his son were allegedly kidnapped by Jadhav and his two senior inspectors on September 26, 2009

Karishma, the wife of bookie Anil Jaisinghani, was issued an arms licence after she complained of serious threats to her life from DCP Amar Jadhav.

She and other members of her family have been provided with police protection for the last 18 months after she had reported that Jadhav kidnapped her family for making a quick buck during the IPL matches last year ('You bet we will shoot your son', March 25, 2010).

According to sources within the Thane police, former commissioner of police S P S Yadav issued the licence to Karishma just before his retirement after she had repeatedly made complaints of Jadhav threatening her life.

Talking about living in constant fear, Karishma said, "My husband often travels out of town. My ten-year-old son goes to school. I fear that Jadhav will send his goons to my house or implicate us in a false case."

Case in point

On September 26, 2009 Jadhav and his two senior inspectors had allegedly kidnapped 44-year-old Anil Jaisinghani and his son.

The officers 'detained' him and his son in a nearby three star hotel for four days and forced Anil to place bets on their behalf on the India-Australia match in South Africa.

When Karishma reached the hotel to pay the ransom, Jadhav had also allegedly pulled Karishma by her hair and banged her head against the wall. Jadhav called a doctor and treated her. However, Karishma still has to undergo treatment.

Karishma added that she also received threatening calls from Jadhav to withdraw her complaint.

"We often received threats from the underworld warning us to withdraw our complaint and not approach the High Court," Anil added, "We are thankful to S P S Yadav and the government of Maharashtra who issued an arms licence to my wife."

Despite several attempts, Jadhav was unavailable for comment. He did not reply to repeated text messages.
