A 62-year-old general physician allegedly molested a patient at his clinic in Mulund East last Friday. The police have registered a case of molestation against him and will seek opinions from senior doctors on whether the physician's ‘touch' was crucial to the treatment he was administering.

Police said the complainant, a 42-year-old woman from Mulund (W), recently approached a family physician for persistent hand cramps and was referred to a senior doctor in Mulund (E). The woman, accompanied by her 16-year-old son and sister, sought an appointment with the physician on Friday evening at his clinic. While examining her arm, the physician allegedly touched her inappropriately. The woman initially kept mum, but when he repeated it, she pulled her hand away, said a police officer.

The doctor then allegedly told the patient that he needed to inject vitamin supplements through her hip. The tone of his voice, though, made her uncomfortable and she left the clinic. The next day, the woman and her husband approached the police to lodge a case of molestation.

"We have booked the doctor under sections 354 (outraging modesty), 354A (sexual harassment) and 509 (word, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) of the IPC," said Inspector Sunil Kale of the Navghar police station.

Madhav More, senior inspector, Navghar police station, said the opinions of senior doctors, the medical board or the police surgeon will be sought to establish what body parts the doctor needed to examine for the complainant's ailment.
