Luck ran out for Ajit Singh Dhyan Singh (38), Surender Singh Baldev Singh (21) and Pal Singh Darshan Singh (33) from Delhi who attempted to smuggle 30,000 beedis to Russia on Thursday night.
The trio was to fly by the Russian carrier Aerofloat's Mumbai-Mowcow flight SU 568 when Air India's security personnel noticed an old baggage strap, which had been tied to the luggage to evade security. Sahar police senior inspector Dilip Patil said, "Straps of some previous flight had been used."
When the Air India guard on a routine baggage examination, noticed the old strap, he asked the passengers to open their bags leading to the discovery of 320 boxes of Indian beedis in them.
They were remanded to police custody till February 16, since the police suspect an airport hand in the supply of an old strap.u00a0
