The sessions court may have awarded a life sentence to Manohar Kadam for his role in the brutal killings at Ramabai Nagar in 1997, but the kin of the victims are baying for his blood. Of the 10 families who lost their kin in the incident, the Garuds and Shivsharans are the most affected.
The Garuds who lost their 16-year-old son, Anil, in the firing are unhappy with the verdict, and want it to be converted to a death sentence. "I have been crying for my son for 12 years. Kadam must be hanged to death," said Anil's mother Kantabai.
She said, "I was making chapattis, when there was a noise of crackers being heard outside. Anil went out to see what happened and never returned. Later, we came to know that he was shot by the policemen."
The Shivsharans lost their 14-year-old nephew that day.
Mangesh Shivsaran was the youngest of the 10 people killed on July 11, 1997. His aunt, Sushma, said that around 7 am, Mangesh heard the sound of gunshots, and stepped out to see what had happened. He was standing near a wall when a bullet struck him in the head splitting the skull in two.
"Crows were eating from his skull, but the police did not allow us to take his body. We wanted him hanged," said Sushma.
