Angry youths post hate messages on web pages of the boys
'Alive and well' is what Annie Brown's status on Facebook reads, though things have horribly gone wrong for her 23-year old hostel mate from Tata Institute of Social Sciences (TISS). On April 11 six boys allegedly raped Brown's friend at a house in Andheri, following which social networking sites were flooded with posts of hate messages condemning the perpetrators of the crime.u00a0u00a0u00a0
Visitors on Orkut have left scathing comments on the web pages of Jaskaran Singh Bhullar and Vinamra Soni, the two accused in the rape case.
Online discussion panels, too, saw an influx of visitors expressing their emotions and opinions about the incident over the past few days. The TISS community pages had a discussion on better security measures for women in the city. One user wrote: Though this may not harm the reputation of the institution directly, it surely raises the questions of security. Parents of students who are planning to join the institute will be worried after the incident.
A student of Jai Hind College said that the incident has shocked the student community and it's hard to believe that a few fellow students could be involved in such a ghastly act.
I'm vulnerable, says Bhullar's profileu00a0
Jaskaran Singh Bhullar's profile on a social network site reads: Just like you, I can be unrelenting sometimes. I tend to waste my time on unkind and cowardly things when I should be doing something constructive. For all my strengths and gifts, I am vulnerable and have learned only after losing my reputation, how big a burden it is or what freedom really is.
Annie Brown's April 12 post on Facebook
Annie Brown has finished her last paper, which concludes her course programme in Mumbai. She is a bag of mixed emotions right now, but she has no time to process emotions, because she is off to Darjeeling for a week with her girlfriend and her girlfriend's family. She is excited to be chilly for the first time in four months. PS: The third person is fun."
