CBI's Deputy Superintendent NR Meena, who investigated the murder case of mid-day's veteran journalist J Dey, has been rewarded with a presidential medal. The court had awarded life imprisonment to Chhota Rajan and other convicts, who were part of the conspiracy.

Meena was the DY Superintendent in CBI Mumbai and was appointed as investigating officer for the high profile murder case. The major part of the investigation was carried out by the Mumbai Police and later CBI arrested one more accused in the case. It was Meena who, during his investigation, found out that Rajan planned the murder of Dey. What led to his probe was his book titled ‘Chindi Rags to Riches' that he was planning to write, describing how Rajan became an underworld don with the help of local goons in Chembur.

Meena is also known for his expertise in Call Detail Record analysis in the federal agency. The agency has utilised his expertise in various high profile cases including the Dara Singh encounter case and the Bhanwari Devi murder case. A probe by Meena also led to the death penalty in one of the kidnapping and murder cases of Punjab. Currently, he is posted at CBI's Anti-Corruption Wing in Gandhinagar as Deputy Superintendent.

Dey was shot dead by the Rajan gang outside his residence in 2011. The case was initially investigated by Mumbai Crime Branch and later handed over to CBI after the arrest of Rajan from Indonesia. This year, CBI has bagged 29 President's Police Medal for distinguished service and Police Medal for meritorious service. These will be awarded on Republic Day.
