Mumbai railway will get a red, pink, and purple cover as mass plantation of Bougainvillea glabra plantation will soon begin across Central Railway lines. The plantation comes in an array of colours, including shades of pink, red, and purple that will be maintained for a year by the Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL).
Central Railway's (CR) Mumbai division has formalised a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with BPCL to embark on a tree plantation drive aimed at curbing carbon footprints and enhancing the visual appeal of railway tracks.
"The MOU outlines a 15-month project timeline, including three months for plantation and 12 months for ongoing plant protection and care. BPCL commits to providing and planting 65,000 Bougainvillea Glabra plants, while Central Railway will facilitate water sources at each location. BPCL will take charge of watering the plants and managing maintenance tasks, including organic manure application, periodic weeding, and tagging for plantation," a CR spokesperson said.
"The initiative aims to address issues such as illegal trespassing and encroachment, while simultaneously contributing to improved aesthetics and reduced carbon footprint." "As part of the collaborative effort, tree plantation activities are scheduled to commence on January 26, 2024, coinciding with the 75th Republic Day celebration," he added.
