Accused in the custody of crime branch unit 07
In a significant development, the Mumbai crime branch has arrested a man for providing false information to the police regarding an alleged terrorist threat. Upon investigation, it was revealed that the accused, identified as Nilesh Devpande, harboured malicious intentions and sought revenge against the truck driver after his scooter was involved in a minor collision with the truck.
Late on Saturday night, around 1 am, the Mumbai police control room received an alarming call from an anonymous individual who identified himself as Nilesh Devpande from Kanjurmarg. The caller reported that a fully-loaded tanker, allegedly carrying RDX and two Pakistani nationals, was en route from Mumbai to Goa. Sensing the gravity of the situation, the authorities immediately sprang into action, taking the matter seriously and involving the Maharashtra Anti-Terrorism Squad and the Goa police control room.
However, during the subsequent investigation, the police discovered crucial evidence that raised doubts about the veracity of the caller's claims. It was found that a tanker had indeed passed by Devpande's scooter, causing only a minor collision without any significant consequences. Unravelling the motive behind the false information, the crime branch uncovered Devpande's sinister plan, according to an officer privy to the information.
Apparently driven by anger over the trivial accident, Nilesh hatched a revenge plot to frame the truck driver and instigate a counter-response from the authorities. "His concocted story about RDX being transported in the tanker was designed to cause chaos and apprehension. However, the vigilant efforts of the Mumbai police eventually exposed his deceptive intentions," the officer added.
Following the revelation of the truth, the crime branch promptly arrested Devpande on charges of providing false information to the police. He now faces legal action under relevant sections of the Indian Penal Code for his deliberate attempt to mislead and disrupt the law enforcement process.
"As the case progresses, we will continue to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident, ensuring that such acts of mischief and deception are dealt with firmly and justly," said a senior officer of the crime branch.
