In an effort to reduce the environmental footprint of its 1 billion users, Google Maps on Tuesday announced that it would soon set a default option, which will automatically direct people to the "route with the lowest carbon footprint". This will primarily happen for the routes that would approximately have the same Estimated Time of Arrival (ETA) as the fastest routes.
In cases where the eco-friendly route could significantly increase user's ETA, Google Maps will let them "compare the relative CO2 impact between the routes" so that they can choose one. However, those who always opt for the fastest route can simply adjust their preferences in the Settings. The eco-friendly routes will be launched in the US later this year, followed by a global expansion.
By drawing insights from the US Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory, Google is building its new routing model that focuses on lower fuel consumption based on factors like road incline and traffic congestion. Among several of the updates that would eventually be rolled out, is the new weather layer, which will allow users to see the current and forecasted temperature and weather conditions in a particular area, as well as the new air quality layer.
"To support these efforts, we are working on alerts to help drivers better understand when they will be navigating through one of these zones. You can quickly know if your vehicle is allowed in the area, choose an alternative mode of transportation or take another route," Google said on its blog post.

Soon, users will be able to get a view of all routes and transportation modes available to their destination and can compare how long it will take to get there by car, transit or bike, without toggling between tabs. The maps will automatically prioritise the users' preferred mode of transportation as well as boost modes that are popular in their city.
