Several Ganesh mandals across the city will be highlighting the importance of women's safety in light of the brutal Kolkata rape and murder and Badlapur sexual assault case. One will even hold a workshop to teach kids about good and bad touch.
Ganeshotsav is around the corner and sarvajanik Ganesh mandals are known for showcasing social issues via their design. The brutal rape and murder of a doctor in a Kolkata medical college and sexual assault of school girls in Badlapur triggered rage among citizens and raised concerns about the general security of women despite the existence of several hundred schemes that seek to empower women.

A prominent mandal, Sewricha Raja, has planned a slideshow on women's safety. Vijay Indulkar, chief mentor of the mandal, said, "The mandal is known for its creative decorations but we had stopped adopting elaborate themes four years after the pandemic set in. But after receiving several requests from residents, the mandal decided to do it this year. We had selected some other theme, but as the frequent incidents of sexual harassment of women is a burning issue, the mandal will showcase it." A poem âMaze kay chukale? (What did I do wrong?)' outside the pandal has already gone viral.

The Ganesh mandal in Jawahar Nagar, Goregaon has opted to showcase the issue of women's safety through cutouts. "The subject was selected unanimously during discussions as it is an important social issue. We plan to make cutouts to underline the seriousness of the issue and create awareness among citizens," explained Sachin Ghosalkar, a member of the Jawahar Nagarcha Raja mandal.
Shripad Shinde, chairman of Mangalmurti Sarvjanik Ganeshotsav Mandal near Ram Mandir Junction on SV Road, said women-oriented programmes are held every year. "In 2023, we provided a platform to showcase products and services of women groups through a women empowerment workshop. This year we planned a lecture on Sunday, September 15, on the good and bad touch."
