Konkan divisional chief says political parties should contribute more in voter registration drive

Political parties must participate in the voter registration campaign more actively, stated Maharashtra's Konkan Divisional Commissioner Dr Mahendra Kalyankar, officials said on Friday. Kalyankar, according to the PTI report, is also an electoral roll observer.

According to the officials, Kalyankar met with representatives of all recognised parties on Wednesday in the Thane district and asked them to designate agents at the booth level in order to guarantee transparent and quality updates· to the voter list, the report added.

Meanwhile, the Thane district election department in Maharashtra had, in October, announced the timeline for revising electoral rolls for the Konkan Graduates' constituency. They had said that it would be done between October 16 and December 30, culminating in the publication of the final list of electors, as per PTI.

The deadline for new voter registrations is November 1st, according to Deputy District Election Officer Archana Kadam. Applications for enrollment in the Konkan Graduates' constituency rolls may be submitted online or offline by qualified individuals, according to the official.

As the district election officer, Thane Collector Ashok Shingare advised qualified graduates to sign up for the newly created electoral rolls, according to PTI. Konkan Divisional Commissioner Mahendra Kalyankar has sent similar instructions to districts that are part of the Konkan Graduates' constituency.

Niranjan Davkhare, a member of the legislative council, will serve out his tenure till July 7, 2024, as stated by the Election Commission.

Election laws have also been changed to stop voters on poll duty from possibly abusing postal ballots. To reduce outside influences such as undue pressure, bribery, or threats from candidates or political parties, the amendment requires that these people vote only at certain facilitation centres and not keep their ballots for an extended time.

The Legislative Department of the Law Ministry issued a notification revising the Conduct of Election Rules, 1961, adding a new section 18A, following the Election Commission's suggested changes. With effect from August 23, this clause requires voters who are on election duty to record their votes on postal ballots at designated facilitation centres. Voters in Telangana, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Mizoram, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh would be impacted by this move.
