The Bandra Police have arrested a 74-year-old man for hitting a cyclist with his car and fleeing the spot . The locals took the cyclist to a nearby hospital where he succumbed to his injuries.The deceased, identified as Ronnie Fernandez, a resident of Bandra, worked at the Western Railway workshop in Lower Parel and loved to cycle to office.
In a statement to police, the victim's cousin Melvin Fernandes said, "The family had gathered at Ronnie's railway colony house as one of our relatives was going abroad. He left home in the afternoon for work and at around 2:30 pm we were informed about the accident. When we reached the hospital he was already dead."
According to the police, Fernandes was riding the bicycle in the middle of the road as there was no traffic. But, suddenly a bus came to his left and the Qualis hit him from behind. "He fell and badly hit his head. The doctors have confirmed death due to head injury but we are waiting for a detailed report," said an officer from Bandra police station.
The police have registered an FIR under various sections of the Indian Penal Code and nabbed the accused in less than 24 hours with the help of CCTV footage. "Further investigation is underway," said Rajesh Devare, senior inspector.
