The city Congress membership drive, that was held online, has thrown up some surprising statistics. In most Assembly constituencies, the number of members registered was much less than the party's vote share in 2019 and in some, the numbers were much higher.
The digital membership task force is scheduled to meet in the city on Saturday, in the presence of state party affairs in-charge HK Patil. The statistics will be discussed amid eyebrows raised over very low and extremely high registration. Party insiders said it could be accepted that not all the voters are party's registered members, but the numbers much less than the party's vote share were a concern.
However, the numbers much higher than vote share was something unheard of, they said. There are 36 Assembly segments in greater Mumbai. The Congress contested 29 seats winning four. The party is in the process of preparing for the Mumbai municipal polls. The digital membership drive is a national project.
Among the higher sides, Bandra (East) has 86,070 members as against 38,337 Assembly votes in 2019. On the other hand, Bandra (West) has 22,000 less than the vote share. Chandivali has registered half the vote share, while Kurla, Andheri (East) and Jogeshwari (East) also have much less. Kalina has 4,000 less. Among western suburbs between Andheri and Dahisar, Malad (West) has 22,000 less than the voters who supported the Congress. Others are low in registration.

In the eastern suburbs, Mulund has improved membership over the vote share. Bhandup has 15,000 less members but Ghatkopar (West) has higher. In Mankhurd-Shivaji Nagar, where the Samajwadi Party has won, the Congress has maintained the ratio. Chembur and Anushakti Nagar are down, so is Sion Koliwada.
In the island city, Dharavi has registered 24,000 more, but Colaba has dropped by 30,000. Mumbadevi is down by 38,000. Rest of segments, too, have not been able to match the vote share, though a couple of them have reached closer.
