Unknown persons opened fire at a 32-year-old man in Byculla in the early hours of Saturday morning. While the victim did not suffer any bullet wounds, he hurt his leg while running away from the spot. The police have launched a manhunt for the attackers.

According to the Byculla police, around 3 am on Saturday, Mohsin Salmani, 32, his friend Mohammed Salman Abu Talib Khan and Imran Majeed Sheikh were sitting at Dr Shivdas Chapsi Road when two men on a motorcycle approached them.

"The pillion rider removed a pistol from his waist and fired one round at him, but missed. In an attempt to run from the line of fire, Salmani injured his right leg," said an official from the Byculla police station. After the incident, Mohsin and his friends ran home. The police reached out to them after learning about the incident.

Mohsin has several shops in the Byculla and Mazgaon area. According to police sources, he has been earlier booked for possession of gutkha as well. Saturday's incident could be linked to his business, cops suspect.

"We have registered a case against unknown persons under IPC Section 307 (attempt to murder), 34 (common intention) and relevant sections of Arms Act," said Senior Police Inspector Nandkumar Gopale, Byculla police station.
