Woman’s blackmail scheme on social media leads to financial loss for officer

Woman later threatened to upload morphed video on YouTube

The Cuffe Parade police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against unidentified individuals accused of defrauding a 51-year-old Navy officer of Rs 2.5 lakh. According to the police, the Navy officer, a resident of Navy Nagar in Colaba, connected with an unknown woman on Facebook and ended up being friends with her.

Their friendship took a disconcerting turn on October 25 when the woman initiated a video call, during which she exposed herself and engaged in inappropriate conduct. An officer involved in the case said, "The woman appeared nude during the video call and made explicit gestures, which she then used to create a morphed video." The woman later threatened to upload the morphed video on YouTube, demanding a payment of Rs 31,000 to keep quiet about the matter.

However, she defrauded the officer of an additional Rs 64,000. The victim further disclosed that he received calls from people posing as representatives of both the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and YouTube, all demanding money from him. The police said that a group had swindled Rs 2.5 lakh from the Navy officer. In response, they have registered an FIR against the trio under section 420 for cheating, 383 for extortion, and the pertinent sections of the Information Technology Act.
