Mevalal alias Panna Lal Surat Chauhan was recently arrested by the MBVV police from Delhi.
The sleuths from MBVV crime branch unit-1 arrested a murder suspect from Delhi who had managed to abscond for 27 years. The man was named as one of three accused persons in a murder that had taken place in Mira Bhayandar. The man has been identified as Mevalal alias Panna Lal Surat Chauhan.
Under the guidance of Deputy Commissioner of Police Avinash Ambure, a special drive was conducted to apprehend suspects wanted in various cases under the jurisdiction of the MBVV commissionerate. One such case involved the murder of Dharamnath Ramashankar Pandey in 1997 which took place in Bhayandar. It is alleged that Chauhan and his associates engaged in a heated argument with Pandey and his friend Pramod Pandey over a trivial issue. Dharamanath had allegedly flung a plastic bag of garbage into the muck which splattered on the clothes of Chauhan and others. An enraged Chauhan, along with his associates Vijay Singh Chauhan and Rajendra Pal, allegedly assaulted the victims with bamboo sticks.
Dharamnath succumbed to the injuries while Pramod Pandey sustained injuries. Based on the information from Pramod Pandey, the police lodged an FIR under sections 302, 504, and 34 in the Bhayandar police station. Accused Vijay Singh Chauhan was arrested a day after the crime and Mevalal and Pal remained fugitives. The police found that there was no prior enmity between them as they were strangers to each other till the fateful day.
Constable Pushpendra Thapa, attached to the crime branch, received information about Chauhan's whereabouts and traced him to Delhi. During the investigation, it was revealed that the suspects were from UP. However, Chauhan left his village and moved to Delhi. He was arrested last week and subsequently produced before the court, where he was remanded to judicial custody, said an officer.
