A crew member was injured while three others were trapped in the engine room after a fire broke out in Greatship Rohini on Saturday.

The ship was 92 nautical miles away from Mumbai coast, near the NQO platform rig when the incident occurred. The injured crew member was evacuated and disembarked ashore, stated a press release issued by the Indian Coast Guard (ICG).

On receiving information about the fire, the Coast Guard Operation Centre diverted offshore patrol vessel Samarth for help. A CG Dornier aircraft was also launched to assess the situation.

An MV Albatross-5, which was in the vicinity also reached out to help, tied up a hawser from forecastle of Greatship Rohini and pulled it out to safe location from NQO platform rig, added the press release.

Samarth, in coordination with OSV Priya 27, established boundary cooling for controlling the spread of fire. Due to excessive heat and smoke the crew of Greatship Rohini was unable to enter the engine room. A team from Samarth boarded the vessel for further assessment. Meanwhile, a pollution control vessel has also been sent to the scene of action by the ICG to augment the efforts.

The fire fighting operation is still underway.
