While infrastructure projects are in full swing, the management of waste is still a neglected subject. In the last three years, only 4.07 lakh metric tonne of waste has been processed at the Mulund dumping ground. The contract to process seven million metric tonne of waste was awarded in October 2018, and the project was expected to be completed within six years. The project kicked off only in December after MPCB (Maharashtra Pollution Control Board)granted an NOC. "The contractor hadn't succeeded in finding a spot for dumping the ash. We are expecting the work to be on track in the next financial year," said an official from the Solid Waste Management of the BMC.
