A 17-year-old boy drowned in a water-filled quarry at Virar in Maharashtra's Palghar district while trying to get a ball out of it when he was playing cricket nearby, a fire brigade official told news agency PTI on Saturday.
The incident occurred on Thursday evening, he said.
"The boy, identified as Yash Solkar, tried to get the ball that fell into the water-filled quarry out of it when he was playing a game of cricket on Thursday evening. However, he drowned in the water body," the official told PTI.
The fire brigade personnel rushed to the spot after being alerted, but could not trace him, he said.

Later, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) was called in. Its personnel managed to recover the victim's body, the official told PTI.
The body was later sent for post-mortem to a government hospital and an accidental death report was filed, another official told PTI.
In another incident, a boy died after falling off the terrace of an eight storey building in Nalasopara in Palghar district, a police official told PTI on Friday.
The 14-year-old boy and his sibling were alone at home as their parents had gone out of station when the incident took place on Thursday, the Tulinj police station official told PTI.
"There was some problem with the television reception and deceased Adarsh Mishra went to the terrace to adjust the antenna. He fell off and died while undergoing treatment in a nearby hospital," the official told PTI.
Earlier, a 48-year-old man got swept away after falling into a swollen river in Maharashtra's Palghar district, an official told news agency PTI.
The incident took place at around 6.45 pm on July 23 when the man, from Adagpada at Samba in Talasari area, was crossing the Kolha creek river, district disaster management cell Vivekanand Kadam told PTI.
The man fell into the water body and got swept away, he said.
