Pune most sought after in Maharashtra to study engineering

Data revealed by the Common Entrance Test (CET) Cell shows increased demand again for engineering, after completion of admissions in the state. The data also reveals that Pune is the most sought-after place to study engineering in Maharashtra.

This year, for engineering admissions there were a total of 1,30,543 seats in 329 colleges in the state. Out of these, admissions to a total of 89,024 seats are confirmed. This amounts to around 39 per cent of seats going vacant. But compared to last year, when 50 per cent seats were left vacant; the admissions rate has increased.

Pune has become the top choice for many in Maharashtra to study engineering. In the Pune region, there were a total of 57,774 seats for engineering. Out of these 37,314 have been filled. The second in line of preference is Mumbai where there were a total of 29,747 seats out of which admissions were done for 18,296. Nagpur district ranks third with 13,835 admissions.

Due to major vacancies in engineering courses, the All India Technical Education (AICTE) expert panel had taken a decision to not allow new engineering colleges until 2022. This has been extended again for two years; mid-day wrote about it last month. "In addition to this, more time given to candidates for admission also resulted in an increase in admissions. Not only were they allowed extensions, the admissions process was very flexible," said Ravindra Jagtap, Commissioner CET Cell.
