Authorities in Thane district, Maharashtra, detained a drug peddler, Ashraf Rahium Beig, alias Danny, on Friday in Mumbra's Jeevan Baug area, seizing eight kilograms of ganja and other narcotics valued at Rs 3.60 lakh, as confirmed by an official on Saturday.
Acting on a tip-off, the police established a trap that led to Beig's arrest. Upon searching him, officials discovered 140 bottles of cough syrup and eight kilograms of ganja, estimated at a total worth of Rs 3,60,000, the PTI report stated.
According to the report, the accused's motorcycle, used in the illicit activities, was confiscated by the authorities. He faces charges under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act.
Moreover, Beig was already wanted in connection to a 2023 narcotics case, which involved the seizure of 720 bottles of cough syrup valued at Rs 4,25,000, according to police records.

Meanwhile, in another incident from Thane district, Maharashtra and fell victim to a scam. Two unidentified individuals swindled him out of more than Rs 2 lakh under the premise of granting him a professorial position at Qatar University.
The complaint, registered on Friday at the Ambernath police station, described how the victim, who lives in Gautam Nagar, Ambernath, was contacted by accused recruiters via phone and email. They claimed to have offered him a position as a professor at Qatar University, which led him to believe their assertions, a report by the news agency PTI stated.
According to the report, the fraudsters forced the victim to pay Rs 2,28,600 for registration, document verification, visa processing, and a medical check between August and October 2023.
When the victim enquired about the promised job, the scammers were ambiguous and evasive, causing him to seek redress by filing a police report. The investigation into the incident is still ongoing, the PTI report added.
Meanwhile, Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) Jitendra Awhad has been booked for his remark about Lord Rama. An official told the news agency PTI that the FIR against the legislator had been filed at the Andheri MIDC police station late on Friday night by a VHP functionary. Awhad at a Shirdi event said that Lord Ram was a Bahujan and was a "non-vegetarian".
