The Kalyan GRP police caught a thief who was trying to escape with a gold chain and an iPhone of a woman who had dozed off and reached the Kasara car shed. On questioning, the accused led the cops to the female passenger who identified her belongings, and the robber was placed under arrest. The 23-year-old woman identified as Shweta Hemant Shinde, works as a chef in a well-known hotel in Mumbai and stays in Thane.
"On Wednesday night, she boarded a train from Dadar railway station, which was the last train to Thane. She was in the general compartment of the train and there was a good crowd. But after crossing Matunga, she fell asleep. Later, she woke up to reach Kasara car shed. She found that her gold chain and iPhone were missing. It was the police team that woke her up at the car shed," said a police officer.
The Kalyan GRP team, who were near the Kasara car shed, found the accused suspiciously trying to jump from the train. "The accused jumped from the train and was trying to run away. We caught him and found a gold chain and an iPhone on him. When questioned, he was not able to answer properly. So we checked the train to find the woman sleeping inside. We woke her up and she confirmed that her gold chain and mobile phone were missing. We showed her the valuables and she confirmed that they belonged to her. We detained the accused and the woman was brought to the Kalyan GRP police station in the morning to file a theft case ," said a police officer.
"The accused boarded the train from Masjid Bunder. He wanted to get down at Bhandup. But he found the woman sleeping and was waiting for a chance to commit the theft. However, as the compartment was crowded, he waited. As the train reached the Kasara railway station and everyone got off he waited as the train proceeded to the car shed," said the police officer.

"He claimed he needed cash as his mother was not well and was admitted to the hospital. However, we have not found any evidence for the same and are investigating the matter. The woman said that she was tired and hence fell asleep. We are further investigating to further check the background of the accused and the reason behind the theft," said the police officer. Pandari Kande, Senior Police Inspector, Kalyan GRP, confirmed the arrest of the accused and said the accused would be produced in court on Friday.
