In a special drive conducted by the Thane traffic police on Thursday, more than 5,100 motorists were booked and fines upto Rs 2,02,650 were collected from them. A majority of the offenders were bikers (1,214) who rode without a helmet, 483 auto and taxi drivers were penalised for driving without uniform, and 227 drivers were found having an invalid licence. The police will continue such surprise drives.
The traffic police was given instructions on Thursday to launch a massive crackdown on every violation taking place within the city limits. The action was carried out for 12 hours. "This is the beginning of the special drives. The action on Thursday was for all kinds of violations. But, henceforth we will have a more focused approach," said DCP (Traffic) Balasaheb Patil. "We are urging all motorists to follow traffic rules to avoid police action," Patil added. A few months earlier, the Thane traffic police had launched a special drive against modified horns and honking in silence zones.
