In the fire, that broke out in suburb neighbouring Mumbai, several huts and shops were destroyed. 

The officials told news agencies that some persons were feared injured in the blaze. 

The chief of Mira Bhayandar Municipal Corporation, Sanjay Katkar, told media that the fire began around 6 am. 

MBMC Commissioner Katkar added that the fire broke out in Azad Nagar slum near Bhayandar.

He also told the media that they are trying to bring the fire under control and 24 fire tenders are involved in efforts to douse the fire.

Media reports quoted locals saying that they had heard some explosions before the massive blaze erupted. However, the cause behind the fire is yet to be ascertained. 

Katkar, who is overseeing rescue and relief work at the site, told the media the occupants of huts and other residents of the locality ran out of their homes after the fire. 

According to his statement, many commercial establishements were based in the Azad Nagar slum colony. 

Visuals of the site showed thick smoke billowing from the site of fire as it raged on.

Concurrently, people could be seen attempting to salvage whatever they could from their commercial establishments. 

Other visuals showed firefighters attempting to bring the blaze under control even as it continued to intensify. 

Recently, in similar incident, a fire broke out at Pise water pumping station which charred 20 pumps thereby hitting the water supply of Mumbai. 

The officials on Tuesday said that they have managed to partially restore 14 out of 20 pumps damaged in the blaze.
