Says south district's new DCP Chhaya Sharma about the Shobhit Modi murder case, in an exclusive interview with MiD DAY

Cops don't come tougher than her. So much so that Chhaya Sharma, the seniormost of three women IPS officers currently serving in Delhi Police, recently earned the sobriquet of 'gangster DCP' from commissioner BK Gupta. Now moved to south district from outer Delhi, Sharma says she is prepared to deal with the media glare that comes with the post.

You have recently been appointed DCP of south district. What are your plans for the area?
Though I have recently joined here as DCP, I was posted here as additional DCP around thirteen months ago. I have served here for one year and seven months. Even in that period, I was actively involved in handling issues related to crime, law and order, district administration etc. I know the entire area very well. South district has always done well in detection of crime not only pertaining to this area but also in catching criminals affecting other localities.

The Dhaula Kuan gang rape, the murders of Jigeesha Ghosh, Saumya Viswanathan and Radhika Tanwar - all took place in south Delhi, and all of them were solved. Now the Shobhit murder case is making headlines. What is your take on it?
South district has a history of handling important cases professionally and we will try our best to maintain that record in the future.

Is the general pattern of crime different in south Delhi when compared to the outer district? If yes then how do you plan to change your strategy to deal with this?
Outer Delhi is large in area and only a few important cases were cracked there during my tenure. These cases were highlighted by the media. On the other hand South Delhi attracts lot of media attention. Nevertheless no two districts are the same and apart from the area, size and topography, the crime profile and patterns are also different. I have joined this district after a year and I have also collected data so that police station-specific area security plans can be worked out. In addition to the high detection capabilities of south Delhi, it is also my intention to improve visibility of police in the area and take necessary preventive action so that a proactive approach to crime can be taken.

What is the biggest challenge for you currently, apart from the Shobhit murder case?
The Shobhit murder case is a test for us and some of the best talents of south district are working on it.u00a0
