It was supposed to be the National Road Safety Week, but it's been anything but that in Pune.

This month the city has witnessed 10 fatal accidents. And the Road Safety Week, which kicked off from January 1 has not brought in the desired results.

A D Shinde, additional CP, Pune, told MiD DAY, 10 people have lost their lives in fatal mishaps and 17 were injured in road accidents.

According to Shinde, 11 fatal accidents and 20 serious mishaps had been recorded between January 1 and 10 in 2009.

"I wish that the fatality rate would come down drastically," he said.

The mishaps have taken place on Mumbai-Pune Expressway, Pashan, Bhosari, Sangvi, Hadapsar, Alandi road, Vishrantwadi.u00a0

"Rash driving is rampant in Pune. However, we have successfully enforced drive against drink-driving in and around the city with the help of all the police stations," said ASI Pansare from the traffic branch.

The drive was initiated by Regional Transport Office (RTO) with city police traffic branch and PMC.

RTO had a special focus on drives for repairing of non-functional tail-lamps of heavy vehicles and health check-up of drivers.
