The duo was sent back from Sharjah airport after immigration officials there found that they were travelling on fake Indian passports.
After their arrival, the duo was taken into custody and the airport immigrations officials handed them over to the Vimantal police for further investigations. Suryakant Balmukund Ram (34), central intelligence officer, registered a complaint against the twoat the Vimantal police station under the sections of the IPC forcheating and forgery, and also under sections of the PassportAct.
Police have recovered the fake passports but are finding it difficult to interrogate them, as they do not understand English, Hindi or Marathi. The names on the passport display their names as Ansari Mehboob Alam (24), of Bihar, and Gazi Najbul Hasan (23), of Andhra Pradesh. Police, however, said that their real names could be different.
Assistant Police Inspector P B Kolte, investigating officer in the case, said, "It is known that the two suspects flew to Sharjah from Pune airport on September 21. But, they were held at the Sharjah airport on suspicion of possessing a fake passport. They were then sent back to Pune by the Sharjah authorities onSeptember 22."
"The suspects are not cooperating with the police and are giving contradictory statements. Prima facie, we understand that they are from Myanmar. So we have decided to approach the University of Pune to hire services of a translator who can converse with them," Kolte said.
The duo was remanded to police custody till September 29 yesterday. The police are now probing the source from where the suspects procured the fake passport. Investigations are also on to ascertain the motive behind procuring a fake passport and reasons for their visit to Sharjah.
