3-year-old boy dies after boat capsizes at Shirur lake

Owner of the boating service booked for culpable homicide and illegally operating the service


After a 3-year-old boy died on Wednesday afternoon when a tourists' boat carrying 12 persons capsized at a lake in Shirur. The Shirur police registered a case against the owner of the boating service, Janardan Dnyanoba Thopte, who runs Mauli Agro-Tourism Centre, which is located near Morachi Chincholi. Thopte has been booked on the charges of negligence, culpable homicide and for illegally running the boating service at the lake.

The child has been identified as Darsh Hemant Mohite from Sawant Vihar society in Katraj. Darsh was among six children from Little Angels nursery school who had gone to the agro-tourism centre for a picnic with their parents.

Darsh, his mother and 10 other persons were on the boat when the mishap happened. Some of the employees working at the centre rushed to the boat when it turned turtle and managed to save most. But Darsh's jacket got stuck on the boat, due to which he drowned. He was rushed to hospital but was declared dead by doctors.

Inspector Narayan Sarangkar said a case was registered against Thopte under section 304 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and other IPC sections. "Initially, a case of accidental death was registered at Shikrapur police station, but it was transferred to Shirur police, After investigations, Thopte was found responsib;e for not taking precautionary measures such as posting lifeguards at the lake, installing a board indicating water's depth, providing life jackets etc."
