Aniket Waghmare had stepped out of a cafeteria after meeting a friend when a speeding vehicle mowed him down outside Khadki railway station
As Ramakant Sonawane (42), an employee of the University of Pune, caught up with his childhood friend Aniket Waghmare (33) over a cup of tea on Tuesday night, little did he know it would be the last time he would be meeting his buddy. After a walk down memory lane, when Waghmare stepped out of the cafeteria he was mowed down by a speeding vehicle in front of the Khadki railway station. The incident happened around 9.30 pm. Waghmare worked with a finance company on Fergusson College Road. Amol, the brother of the deceased, said Waghmare had gone to meet his childhood friend Sonawane and was returning home when the accident took place.
"Sonawane had just bid adieu to my brother and gone a few metres away when he heard a thud. He rushed to the spot only to see my brother lying in a pool of blood," said Amol. "Numb with shock, he somehow managed to inform us and the police about the incident." Amol claimed his brother's body was lying on the road for half-an-hour before the police came. "I reached the spot at 10 pm. But till then nobody had tried to take him to a nearby hospital. The ambulance arrived on the scene only by 10.30 pm, almost an hour after it was informed," said Amol.Police Sub-Inspector Pratap Pawar said, "We have recorded the statement of Ramakant Sonawane. No one has seen or noted down the number of the culprit vehicle. For now, we have lodged a case against an unknown person in this regard."
