Best of bombay wants you to experience the best of Mumbai's nightlife on a budget, with fellow revellers you'd be happy to get high with. We hit 4 of Colaba's best pubs, drank, danced and returned just 500 bucks poorer

What began at Bootleggers, a Colaba pub that makes a reference to America's dry spell of the 1920s, around 7.30 pm on a Saturday night, was a quiet evening with Aditi Shah of Bestofbombay, politely huddling us in groups to get into an empty bar.

Things were looking grim as those of us who had registered (Rs 500) for the event were gussying to arrive fashionably late. But that didn't deter Aditi from taxiing down her bar crawl bus on time.

Bar crawlers get their drinks and a chance to croon on the mic at Soul Fry Casa

After a 45-minute warm-up, and a welcome drink at Bootleggers just about kicking us a wee bit for a trip, it made good to take a spin to another nightspot (Busaba at Mandlik Road) on a double decker bus.

By this time, not only was the bus suddenly full, it also had people chattering, sharing a ciggie, posing for out-of-focus snapshots, and generally behaving like they were on back-slapping terms.

The occasional "tree alert" that was sounded out each time a roadside tree's branches threatened to brush us off the deck, had us duck with a raucous hoot. We were on a roll and how!

Busaba, a pub housed in an ancient one-storey bungalow in a bylane off Colaba Causeway, strengthened our spirits as the music got stronger in our veins.

The next pit stop was Soul Casa Fry, Fort's Goan-theme restaurant that serves fascinating cocktails and the best Sungta Maria (Prawn Balchow on toast).

Here, the karaoke mic made us realise why the Japanese love it. After downing three welcome drinks, anyone is going to feel smart to yell out eighties pop numbers as if to the manner born. If not rock stars, we were great chorus line girls chiming unequivocally, hell ya!

When we got to Red Light at Kala Ghoda, the last stop in the bar crawl endeavour, we hit the crimson lit dance floor with a vengeance. Shimmy-shimming with B-lister glitterati. Sounds fun?

Drink for a cause: The recent rise in drunken driving is an issue Bestofbombay wishes to address. The bar crawl is a social do, and serves a social cause by assigning a chauffeur to each person who brings his/her car along for the night out. The bus lugs you around, and chauffeurs from partyharddrivers.com ensure you get home mighty pissed, but safe after the revelry wraps up.

What's next: The next bar crawl is scheduled for April 4 in Bandra. Your itinerary includes riding in an open-deck bus to get to four of the hottest nightspots. Each pit stop will see a halt of 45 minutes, where participants get one free welcome drink. We walked away with a goodie bag (Besofbombay tee, funky pen drive and a music CD).

Registration fees: Rs 500. Call: 9619207356 or send a mail to: barcrawl@bestofbombay.com
