The discussion to be held today aims at offering insight to students about expectations of various recruiters

With the sliding rupee and the crashing markets, recession is on everyone's minds. Today, the Board of Student Welfare department of the University of Pune (UoP) will see over 70 corporates including IT giants, automobile companies and several others in a discussion on placements during recessionary market conditions. Students from over 250 engineering colleges are expected to be present in rapt attention at the seminar, which is a first of its kind endeavour by the varsity.

It is a well-known fact that since 2009, the Indian job sector has seen ebbs and flows, however the current trend has driven students to deeper lows. "Since many years we have been conducting placement drives, but for the first time we are inviting managing directors and human resource officers of 450 companies from across the state. It's a preliminary meet, which will clearly define the placement criteria adopted by corporates," Dr Pandit Shelke, director of Board of Students' Welfare said.

"Since staff who look after placement drive in their college are participating in the meet, it will help them identify various sectors and niche areas that students can look at," Shelke added. Companies, who are looking for specific skills such as knowledge of a specific software or language proficiency, can conduct special training for students on campus. This will make them better prepared for challenges that lie ahead. Bharat Forge, Capgemini, Forbes Marshall, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Volkswagen, Persistent Systems, Wipro Technologies, Fiat India and Voltas are some of the big brands participating in the meet.

"Out of thousands of engineers passing out each year, very few are employable - this is a common argument in the industry. The conference is a step to bridge this gap between industry and academia," Prof Shitalkumar Rawandale, Dean, Industry Institute Interaction of PCCOE said.u00a0
