Engineer-turned-designer Pari Gala makes graffiti beanbag covers that are custom-made to say what's on your mind
If youu00a0walk into Akhil Kapoor's Juhu home, you are likely to be invited to sit on a bean bag painted with 'accha beta', 'OMG!', and 'jabri' (the last one is shrewd in Gujarati). The quirky seating option was a gift from Kapoor's friend Pari Gala for his last birthday. Gala, who bagged a degree in IT engineering last year, decided to gift Kapoor a beanbag painted with phrases he uses often. The bag became such a conversation starter, Kapoor began receiving requests from those who wanted customised beanbag covers too.
Here's how it works: Let Gala know the words of wisdom you want your beanbag to sport and wait for her to work her magic. "They have to do nothing except tell me what they want," says the artist who is currently working on a design that mixes cars with marijuana leaves.
And the next order is one with a graduation theme. "My friend is graduating from medical school, and she's shared 16 items that she wants incorporated on her beanbag cover, including a stethoscope, haversack and books."u00a0
It takes Gala close to six days to work on a single cover.u00a0Two years ago, while still in college, Gala painted a shoe because she felt like doodling and realisedu00a0 it looked funky. Gala did a few more, and gradually began painting on order, moving onto purses, pillow covers, wallets and beanbag covers. Having discovered her passion, Gala wants to pursue a degree in lifestyle accessory design.
