Three persons, including the 33-year-old waiter of a small tea stall in Lohiya Nagar, were injured when a police constable's gun fired accidentally and hit the trio in the legs. Following the incident, an angry crowd gathered on the road and top police officials rushed to the spot to defuse the tension.
The incident took place at 5.40 pm yesterday when two police men attached to the Lohiya Nagar police chowky visited the stall for a cup of tea.
The injured persons have been identified as Dilip Sakharam Tekale, Sandeep Adep and Abid Salim Khan.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone II) Raghunath Khaire said, "At 5.40 pm, two police marshals, Vilas Kashid and Sharad Jhanjare went to Ambika tea stall near Lohiyana Nagar police chowky.
While entering the shop, Kashid, who was carrying the carbine, was pushed by another customer and his carbine fell down. In an attempt to regain a hold of the carbine, his fingers touched the trigger and three bullets were fired, injuring a waiter and two customers in the legs."
He further said that after the incident, the injured persons were rushed to the Sassoon hospital where they have been undergoing treatment, and are said to be out of danger.
"We have ordered an inquiry and are also checking whether the incident took place due to negligence of the police constables," said Khaire.
After the bullets were fired, tension prevailed in the Lohiya Nagar area and a large number of people gathered on the road.
