Municipal authorities here are mulling action against some fishermen who allegedly used banned nets to catch 'Pesalai' fish, spilling their remains in the sea

Rameswaram: Municipal authorities in Rameswaram are mulling action against some fishermen who allegedly used banned nets to catch 'Pesalai' fish, spilling their remains in the sea.

Pilgrims, who gathered at the Agni Theertham-the holy sea near Sri Ramanathaswamy temple in Rameshwaram- were taken aback when they found the water floating with the remains. Health Inspector Ayappan said two people vomitted after taking bath in the sea,and they were treated as out-patients.

A close monitoring of the transport of Pesali fish was being done now. Assistant Director of fisheries Gopinath said each boat brought from the sea about four tonnes of pesali fish on Monday.

Most of them used banned fishing nets, which injured the fish leading to blood and remains being spilled in the sea, he added. The health inspector said the municipality would soon take action against fishermen who spilled the remains of the fish at the holy site.
