Hundreds of scholars clashed with the police and suffered injuries during lathicharge while demanding an apology from four boys who were found drinking on campus. When the police refused to hand them over, the angry mob damaged the car that the accused were drinking in and pelted the police with stones.
A day after, the clamour has not slowed down. On Monday, the university administration, in collaboration with the student's union, formed a committee to probe into the matter and find out what went wrong. The panel, which comprises member of the security staff also, will also investigate whether the police failed to take appropriate action or trying to shield the accused. The committee will submit its report on Friday. JNU Student's Union vice-president Shephalika Shekhar said, "Once the entire enquiry is completed, we will look into the intricacies of the matter. If the panel found that the police conduct was not justified, we will take cognizance of the matter and file a case against the police. We need to take a strong stand on the entire incident."
The student's body also plans to hold another meeting with the varsity administration on enhancing the security on the campus. "This is not the first time that outsiders have created a ruckus on the campus. We need to address this issue before some unfortunate incident takes place," added Shekhar.
Meanwhile, one of the four accused, Nitin Kapoor, who was arrested today moved a Delhi court for bail. In the bail application, filed before Metropolitan Magistrate Sanjeev Kumar, the accused said most of the penal charges slapped against him were bailable. The court, which remanded accused Kapoor, Gagan Kumar, Ankit Nanda and Amit Chauhan to one day judicial custody, has now fixed the bail plea hearing for tomorrow.
Condemning the attack, different political parties also protested against "the brutal and unprovoked attack" by armed police on students. Over 100 students joined one such demonstration organised by the student's union.
"This has not happened for the first time. Few months back, there was a similar case, where a policeman was involved. He was in civil dress and acting weird. We managed to trap him and took him to the police station.
But the police tried to save him. He later managed to escape.u00a0 JNU is not a picnic spot. All students of JNU are together in fighting this cause," AISA National General Secretary Ravi Rai said.
Not so influential after allThe Delhi police revealed the identity of all the four accused on Monday. Gagan Kumar is a former JNU student, Ankit Nanda a chartered accountant, Nitin Kapoor is a hotel management student, and Amit Chauhan is working as a manager with a private mall. While three of them Gagan, Nitin and Amit are residents of Laxmi Bai Nagar, Ankit Nanda resides at Malviya Nagar. Deputy Commissioner of Police, South district, HGS Dhaliwal said that some of them may have been from outside who tried to take advantage of the situation. "We have video-graphed the entire incident and will be minutely examining it during further investigations."
When asked whether cops took permission of the university administration before entering the campus, Dhaliwal said, "To save lives of people, the police didn't need any permission."
Meanwhile, policemen were deployed in strength outside the campus to prevent any untoward incident and in view of the protest marches.
