Delayed: Varun Kamble

The funeral of a man from the city was delayed by about eight hours, because the airlines conveying his body developed a technical snag.

The Indian Airlines aircraft, along with 120 passengers,u00a0 was carrying the bodies of two men -- one from the city and another from Nashik -- who were found dead in a Ladakh hotel on Tuesday. Their death was reportedly due to lack of oxygen. The deceased Varun Kamble (26), a resident of Aundh and Deepak Wagh (26) from Nashik, had gone to Ladakh for some adventure travel. Both were working in the Oriental Bank of Commerce, in Ahmedabad.

Narrating his ordeal on the flight, Varun's father Anil Kamble, a faculty member at the Rahuri Agricultural University, said: "We were carrying his body back to Pune from Delhi on Wednesday afternoon. First, we were seated in a flight which the crew said had developed a technical snag. After sometime we were told to get into another flight the same evening, which departed around 7pm. After flying for about 30 minutes we landed, and the crew told us that we were back in Delhi. Even the second aircraft was suffering from a technical glitch, they said.

"We had asked our relatives and other friends to wait for us at the crematorium at 6 pm. But we reached only around 11pm. By then, Varun's body had already started decomposing. We carried out the funeral in the wee hours of Thursday," Kamble said.

What happened?
Kamble said that Varun and Deepak had hired a room in the Sumerini Hotel. "Ladakh is facing severe cold wave, currently, and the hotel room was closed from all sides. Varun and Deepak had kept the heater on for the entire night on Monday. Varun was online and chatting with friends till late night. On Tuesday around 9am, a taxi driver came calling on Varun and Deepak but found the door locked. The hotel management then called in the police and broke open the door," Kamble said.

Kamble said both Varun and Deepak were found unconscious and taken to a nearby hospital. "They were declared dead by the doctors. The police inspected the room and saw the heater was on. They said that as the room was closed and the heater on, the oxygen levels must have depleted and the heater may have emitted poisonous gas. Varun's post-mortem report says his death was due to inhalation of poisonous gas," Kamble said.
